What does "proprietary blend" actually mean, and are all blends the same?

A proprietary blend groups multiple ingredients under a single total weight on the label, without showing the individual dose of each ingredient. Halea Life uses blends in some products, and we want to be straight about what that means and why, rather than pretending blends are always a problem.

The honest answer is that blends exist on a spectrum. At one end is the bad version: a blend designed to make a label look impressive by listing well-known ingredient names at doses too small to do anything, but hiding that underdosing behind a single total weight. If a "Cognitive Complex 500mg" lists five ingredients including Alpha GPC, the Alpha GPC portion might be 50mg rather than the 300mg the research uses. The label looks credible. The product does not perform.

At the other end is the legitimate version: a multi-botanical or multi-ingredient formula where the total blend weight is clinically meaningful and the combination is designed for synergistic effect, not label inflation. Ingredient Quality
Two supplements list the same ingredient. Why is one $12 and one $45 , does it matter?

Sometimes the price difference is pure marketing. Sometimes it reflects a genuinely meaningful difference in the ingredient itself. The challenge is knowing which.

Vitamin B12 is a clear example. Cyanocobalamin is the synthetic form used in most commodity supplements because it costs significantly less to manufacture. Methylcobalamin is the bioactive form (the form the body actually uses) and it costs more. Both products label themselves "Vitamin B12." A $9 bottle and a $24 bottle can both say B12, but what is inside is meaningfully different. Cyanocobalamin must be converted by the body through enzymatic steps that require functioning MTHFR enzymes, impaired in an estimated 40 to 60% of people due to common genetic polymorphisms. Methylcobalamin arrives already in the active form, no conversion required.*

Iron tells the same story. Ferrous sulfate is cheap, widely used, and notorious for causing nausea, constipation, and GI cramping, because a large fraction of the dose is not absorbed and reaches the colon intact, where it causes irritation. Timing
Morning or night? With food or without? What actually matters for timing?

Less than the industry implies, but more than nothing. Here is what actually matters.

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) need fat to absorb. These nutrients require dietary fat for uptake in the small intestine. Taking them on a completely empty stomach, particularly first thing in the morning, significantly reduces how much you actually absorb. Taking them with a meal that contains some fat, even a small amount, makes a meaningful difference. Breakfast or dinner, not a fasted morning routine.*

Iron absorbs best on an empty stomach, but GI sensitivity matters more. Technically, iron absorption is higher when taken without food and without other minerals competing for the same transport pathways. Practically, most people cannot tolerate iron on an empty stomach, particularly with ferrous sulfate formulations. With Ferric Saccharate in strip form, GI tolerance is much better. Take it however you will actually take it consistently, because a tolerated daily dose beats a theoretically optimal dose that makes you feel sick.*

Caffeine-containing supplements belong in the morning. This is not advice, it is pharmacology. Caffeine has a 5 to 6 hour half-life. Taking 200mg at 3pm means significant active caffeine is still in your system at 9pm, competing with adenosine and delaying sleep onset. Unless you work nights, caffeinated supplements go in the morning.*

For everything else, the best time is the time you will actually take it. Consistency produces results. The optimal theoretical timing of a supplement you forget four days a week is irrelevant compared to a suboptimal timing you hit every day. Realistic Expectations
How long before I actually notice a difference?

It depends entirely on what the supplement does and what gap it is filling. This is one of the areas where the industry does the most damage, because the pressure to show immediate results pushes companies toward products that produce a felt effect quickly (usually via stimulants) rather than products that address real biological needs over time.

The missing variable: If you start a supplement and feel nothing after 30 days, consider whether you had the gap to fill in the first place. Vitamin D supplementation produces noticeable benefits in people who are deficient. In people who were already sufficient, the benefit is maintenance, important but invisible.
Storage and Habit
Where should I keep my supplements, and what do I do if I miss a day?

The two worst places most people store supplements are the bathroom medicine cabinet and the kitchen counter near the stove. Both expose products to the combination of heat, humidity, and light that degrades potency over time. Light accelerates breakdown of B vitamins and many antioxidants. Humidity introduces moisture that alters the chemistry of the product. Heat speeds up essentially all degradation chemistry.

A cool, dark, dry location is the right answer: a kitchen cabinet away from the stove and sink, a bedroom drawer, or a dedicated shelf in a closet. Keep supplements in their original containers with lids tightly closed. If the container is opaque, that is deliberate: it is providing light protection that a clear glass jar on your countertop does not.

On missing a day: it does not matter. Resume the next day. Do not double up. The promo code cycle works like this: a product is priced at $39.99 with a permanent 20% off code that effectively makes the real price $31.99. The $39.99 is the anchor, a number designed to make the discounted price feel like a win. But if the code is always available and everyone knows it, the real price is $31.99. The $39.99 is fiction. Is it possible to take too many supplements, and how do I know if something I'm taking is interacting with a medication?

On medication interactions, a few are clinically significant and well documented: high-dose fish oil and vitamin E can increase bleeding risk and interact with warfarin and other anticoagulants. How to Actually Read a Supplement Label in 60 Seconds

Most supplement labels are designed to be skimmed, not read. The front panel is marketing. The supplement facts panel on the back is where the actual information lives. Here is what to look for, in order.

If the supplement facts panel lists a blend with a single total weight and multiple ingredients underneath, you cannot verify individual doses. This is a reason to look for an alternative with full disclosure, not necessarily a reason to dismiss the product, but it removes your ability to assess value.*

Look past the ingredient name to the form in parentheses. "Magnesium (as magnesium oxide)" absorbs poorly. "Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate or citrate)" absorbs well.
